Good Morning Cairns

My normal day at home involves getting up to the kids, doing the usual Dad thing, getting ready for work then commute on a train for almost an hour into work. Today was a bit different; my body clock still woke me up around 6:00am. Instead of just falling back to sleep I decided to get up and go for a run along the Cairns Esplanade.

Why? Because I had the opportunity, work was about 10 minutes away from where I was staying, I only had to get myself ready in the morning and it was a beautiful 19 degrees outside. So I strapped on my heart rate monitor, IPhone armband, headphones, had a sip of water and off I headed. I started with a 5 minute fast paced walk to get the body going. I then started to run, heading towards the Esplanade.

For those that have never been to Cairns, the Esplanade is a beautiful boardwalk along the bay, which hundreds of people flock to exercise. It was still dark outside, but it only took me a few minutes to reach the Esplanade. I didn’t have a distance in mind, I just decided to run for 15mins, turn around and run back, running for a total of 30mins. In terms of intensity I use my heart rate monitor to assess how hard I am training. On this run I aimed to keep my heart rate around 160 BPM. It doesn’t matter how hard I perceive that I am training, I know that if I check my heart rate and it’s below 160 BPM, I have to pick up the pace. If I’m maintaining a pace that is over 160 BPM, then great it means I’m working hard.

As I was running the sun was beginning to rise over the bay and mountain range. It was that impressive I stopped running whipped out my Iphone and took a picture. I then ran back to my accommodation. Time for breakfast a shower and off to work.

Training in the morning is always a great option, if you have the opportunity take it. It means that no matter how your day unfolds, you have already got some training in. My intention was to do some weights in the afternoon, but work got a little bit out of control, and I simply did not have enough time to make it to the gym. If I had have used the eXcuse that I was tired in the morning and gone back to sleep, I would not have had another chance to train at all today, and all I would have had was an extra half an hours sleep, instead I got my body moving and burnt about 400 calories again all for the bargain basement price of zero dollars, all it took was about 35mins of my time.
